Voter turnout hits record high, will it continue?

Registered voters in Sevier, Wayne, and Piute Counties have been consecutively increasing their voter turnout over the last 15 years and four presidential elections. With this trend, it is predictable that the coming 2024 presidential election will become yet another record breaking turn out for Utah voters.

In 2020 alone, the election will go down in history for many reasons, but one being the record number of voters across Utah counties. According to the certified results of the November 3, 2020 election results, a record 90.09% of active Utah voters cast ballots, beating the prior record of 89.6% in 1964.

Figures were compiled in 2020, 2016, 2012, and 2008 show that Wayne County had a dramatic increase in ballots cast between the 2016 and 2008 presidential election.

In 2020, Wayne County had the highest voter turnout against all other Utah Counties in the entire state, hitting 93.11% turnout. Second place was Iron County with 92.83% and third was Summit County with 92.44%.

In 2016, Wayne County voters had 89.18% of its registered voters, but looking at the trend continuously dropped between 2012 with 74.78%and 2008 with 72.05%.

When looking at Piute County, the number of registered voters is the most stable as compared to the other two, however the ballots cast are not. In 2020, 87.59% of registered voters turned out but in 2016 only 72.94%; 2012 only 81.76% and 2008 only 82.91%.

Piute County was ranked fifth of the top five lowest voter turnouts for the 2020 election, slightly ahead of Garfield, Duchesne, Kane, and Juab.

Sevier County has the highest number of registered voters in our service district with its best year being 2020 election with a 90.53% turnout rate.

In the last 15 years, Sevier County is the only one in our service district which continuously increased its turnout percentage across all four election cycles. In 2016, Sevier County’s turnout percentage was 88.39%, 2012 was 81.87%, and in 2008 it was 74.70%.
