One Woman’s ViewTolling the Bell for Peace

August 6 was the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, which occurred in 1945, precipitating the unconditional surrender of Japan. In many of the World War II histories done by my students, interviewees expressed their relief that they would not have to invade Japan. Since Germany had also surrendered, these young men could return home to normal lives, as normal as one can be after having experienced the horror of killing and destruction.
