What does the midwinter solstice have to do with Christmas? Some people get upset about the origins of the holiday, so I apologize in advance if any of this is unwelcome. It would not be in “the spirit of Christmas” to unnecessarily offend anyone.

Thursday, Dec. 30, 1971 edition “Bill Creates Capitol Reef As Park” This week in history, Capitol Reef was officially designated as a national park. U.S. President Richard Nixon signed the bill Dec. 22, in Washington D.C., that made Capitol Reef Utah’s fifth national park. Also created this same year was Arches National Park.

Not surprisingly, evidence shows that college completion benefits individuals by providing financial and emotional well-being, families by providing stability and financial security, and the state by reducing the state-wide gender gap in education and wages. Unfortunately, Utah has one of the highest levels of gender inequality in higher education in the United States, particularly at the graduate level.
