Evacuation announced for Burrville, Monroe Canyon, and Poverty

Sevier County Emergency Management has issued evacuation orders for Burrville, Monroe Canyon, and parts of the Poverty area in response to the rapid expansion of the Monroe Canyon Fire.

The notice, released Wednesday, July 30 at approximately 5:20 p.m., included a statement from Deputy William Taufer: “Those who need to evacuate have been notified. Law enforcement and search and rescue are in the area. No other cities or towns are being evacuated at this time.”

As of Wednesday morning, the fire has grown to 36,637 acres and is only 11% contained. Over 1,050 personnel are currently assigned to the incident, working to slow its progress and protect threatened areas.

According to officials during the Monroe Canyon Fire Community Meeting, a total of 15-20 homes were evacuated from Monroe Canyon, Jones Road area and south on Poverty Flats.

SR-24 was temporarily closed between Aurora and Loa but has since been reopened.

Residents are urged to remain alert and follow all evacuation instructions and safety updates from local authorities.
