Early Monday morning, March 17, at approximately 5 a.m., a fire was reported at 355 North 400 East in Richfield.
According to Richfield City Police Chief Trent Lloyd, the homeowner initially believed she had heard a noise caused by her cat. However, she soon realized the sounds were the popping of the fire.
Upon discovering the danger, the resident fled to a neighbor’s house, where 911 was called.
The State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire originated near the back of the home.
“The problem was where the fire started,” said Lloyd. “It ignited the gas meter, and the gas line continued fueling the flames as the fire spread into the attic.”
Fire damage was primarily contained to the back of the home, where the blaze started, and the roof.
As a precaution, nearby residents were evacuated for approximately 20 minutes while emergency crews worked to shut off the gas line and ensure the area was safe.
“We evacuated residents behind the home and to the north and south because we couldn’t initially shut off the gas line,” Lloyd explained. “Once the line was secured, residents were allowed to return to their homes.”
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the home has suffered significant damage.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as the Fire Marshal completes the investigation.
