In 2022, the Obray family experienced an unimaginable loss when their beloved son, Dexton Obray, succumbed to his battle with depression at just 14 years old. In the wake of this tragedy, the Obray family chose to transform their grief into a beacon of hope and kindness, creating Dexton’s Light Foundation. This organization is dedicated to honoring Dexton’s spirit and his commitment to spreading love and compassion.

Dexton’s kindness was evident from a young age. In fifth grade, he conceived a heartfelt gesture: ensuring that every girl in his grade received a gift on Valentine’s Day.

His mother, Brittney Obray, recalls the joy radiating from him as he delivered flowers to his classmates. “It was always Dexton’s mission to make sure no one felt left out,” she shared. “When he delivered the flowers, he was just beaming with joy and so proud.”

This small yet powerful act of kindness left a lasting impression. In 2022, after Dexton’s untimely passing, the girls who had received his flowers visited the Obray home. They brought flowers, balloons, and heartfelt messages recounting their fondest memories of Dexton.

“We were so touched by their kindness and love for Dexton,” Brittney said, reflecting on the profound impact of his gesture.

Continuing Dexton’s mission

Motivated by the desire to perpetuate Dexton’s legacy, the Obray family established Dexton’s Light Foundation. The foundation’s centerpiece event is the annual Valentine’s Day initiative, during which roses are delivered to local high school girls.

“Our purpose is to share Dexton’s light and to spread joy,” Brittney explained. In its inaugural year, the foundation distributed roses to South Sevier High School and Middle School. The following year, the initiative expanded to include North Sevier High School, Beaver High School, Richfield High School, and South Sevier, delivering approximately 1,800 roses.

This year, the foundation has set an ambitious goal: to distribute 4,000 roses across rural Utah. The initiative has already confirmed deliveries to schools including Kanab High School, Valley High School, Enterprise High School, Fredonia High School, and many others.

In addition to spreading kindness, the Obray family has embraced advocacy for mental health awareness and the regulation of social media—a platform that significantly impacted Dexton. Brittney Obray reflected on the role of social media in Dexton’s struggles.

“We didn’t know Dexton was struggling with depression,” she said. “Without social media, we are 100% sure that Dexton would still be here.”

Through their advocacy, the Obray family hopes to spark conversations about mental health, emphasize the importance of community, and encourage a healthier relationship with social media for today’s youth.
