Voting by mail shouldn’t be a new thing for most people in Sevier County.
The county switched to a ballot-by-mail system in 2014, and for the most part it’s worked out well.
However, the county has continued to offer in person ballot casting at different locations so people who are uncomfortable with ballot-by-mail have an option.
This year that option is being suspended, at least for this June’s primary election.
Voters in the county are receiving a blue postcard in the mail this week informing them due to the coronavirus, there will be no in-person polling places open for the primary election, which is set for Tuesday, June 30.
While this may be a break from the traditional voting options, voting is still able to be done by mail, and it’s easy.
The whole point of the ballot by mail system is to make it more convenient for voters to participate in elections. Simply fill out the ballot card, put it in the postage pre-paid envelope and stick it in the mail.
Ballots can also be deposited in drop boxes June 30.
However, this also means there will be no voter registration by provisional ballot and no voter registration in person.
This means those who are not registered to vote, or who want to participate in the state’s Republican primary, must have their voter registration completed at least 11 days before the election.
It’s very important for people to utilize their votes in order for the system to work. The initial impulse for many people may be to set the ballots aside and fill them out later. However, voters need to fill them out and send them back as soon as possible.
Fortunately, the state of Utah has made it incredibly easy to check one’s voter registration status.
Simply log on to vote.utah.gov. There are tools on the website designed to help people check their registration status, as well as to update it and register if they are not registered.
Now is the time to take care of one’s registration.
