JUNCTION — The Piute High School girls’ basketball team secured a 72-65 win over Wayne in the Lady Thunderbirds’ final regular season game of the year Feb. 2.
The win puts Piute at 10-4 in league play, tied with Panguitch. Bryce Valley leads the region at 12-2, followed by Wayne at 11-3.
The Lady Badgers started things off by capturing a 16-15 edge at the end of the first quarter. Piute shifted the momentum back, going up 37-29 by halftime. Piute was able to hold onto the lead through the next two quarters to ice the win.
Wayne’s Courtney Jackson didn’t make it easy, as she blasted the net for 27 points. She also dominated the boards, pulling down eight rebounds. Kolbi Clark added 13 points to Wayne’s total.
Kassidy Ellett drained two 3-pointers for Wayne on her way to a total of eight points.
Piute’s girls followed the lead of Mickell Morgan, who posted 25 points during the game. She also hit a downtowner. Mikaylee Morgan and Jordyn Kennedy both added 14 points to Piute’s effort. Macey Dalton hit two treys on her way to eight points.
Wayne starts off the Region 20 tournament with a home game against Parowan, while Piute is slated to host Milford. Both games are set to start at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, after Reaper press time.
Then the Region 20 tournament moves to Richfield High School today, Feb. 9, and continues through Friday, Feb. 10.
