Baseball tourney draws 62 teams

Members of the Piute 15-year-old team celebrate winning at the state Babe Ruth Baseball tournament in Richfield Saturday. The state Babe Ruth Baseball tournament drew 62 teams from throughout the state to Richfield Friday and Saturday. 

Volunteer organizers included Chet White, Candy Giddings and members of the Richfield Babe Ruth board. 

Richfield City also helped in the preparation of the fields. 

The tournament included nine age divisions and 11 brackets.

Piute’s 15-year-old team won its bracket in the tournament. The Thunderbirds shut down Vernal in a 10-0 contest in the final game. Gavin Morgan threw the shutout. 

Price won the 14-year-old division, as Carbon took home the gold in the 13-year-old bracket.

The 12-year-old division had an A and B bracket. Vernal won the A bracket, followed by Richfield in second place. Emery won the B bracket.

Roosevelt claimed victory in the 11-year-old bracket. Carbon and Panguitch won the 10-year-old A and B brackets, respectively.

Vernal claimed the nine-year-old championship, while Emery won the eight-year-old division.
