MONROE – South Sevier High School’s Lady Rams defeated inter-county rivals, the Lady Wildcats of Richfield, 54-47, during a face-paced, energetic scramble in Monroe, Jan. 16. The Lady Rams’ winning streak is now 16-0 overall and 4-0 in region play. They are ranked first in the 3A division. The loss bumped the Lady ’Cats down from being ranked second to third with a 12-4 overall record, which puts them behind Grantsville, who currently has a 14-2 record.
During the rivalry bout between the Lady Rams and the Lady ’Cats, South Sevier shot 73 percent from the foul line making eight of 11 attempts. Richfield shot 26 percent from the field and sank four of seven from the free-throw line for 57 percent.
The two well-matched squads both posted 12 points during the first quarter. The Lady Rams lead by two points at the mid-point of the game, 23-21. After the halftime break, the Lady ’Cats came out cold and struggled to find the bottom of the bucket. The Lady Rams extended their lead to nine points, 39-30, in the third stanza. The Lady ’Cats fought back during the final eight-minute stretch and outscored the Lady Rams 17-15, yet were unable to overcome the deficit created during the third quarter and the Lady Rams chalked the tough victory.
South Sevier’s Presley Chappell topped the Lady Rams’ scoring with 19 points. Brookell Brindley drilled three 3-pointers at key moments during the matchup for nine of her 14-point contribution. Kenzie Jones hit one from downtown on her way to 10 points. Leah Torgerson had seven points, while Cassie Johnson posted four points for the Lady Rams.
Passion Reitz led the Lady ’Cat pack with 21 points, six of which were earned from behind the arc. She also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jarica Steck drained four from three-point land on her way to 17 points, six rebounds, an assist and two steals. Nicole Willardson put up four points and pulled down eight boards for the Lady ’Cats. Rebecca Poulsen had three points and two rebounds, while Jordyn Moon had two points, nabbed four boards, assisted three times and stole the ball from the Lady Rams three times. Sipola Vakautakakala grabbed four rebounds, had an assist and two steals during the bout.
The Lady ’Cats will host Emery’s Lady Spartans on their home court in Richfield today, Jan. 23, while the Lady Rams will tip-off against the Lady Dinos of Carbon today in Monroe. Both bouts are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
