Lady ’Cats hold tough

 Richfield High School’s volleyball team picked up their second region loss of the season to the Lady Broncos of San Juan, 3-1, in Blanding, Oct. 4. The Lady Wildcats rallied back after the disappointment and picked up a 3-2 victory over Grand’s Lady Red Devils in Moab, Oct. 5, as well as a 3-1 win over North Sanpete’s Lady Hawks in Mount Pleasant, Oct. 8. 

The hard-fought, four-set loss to San Juan played out with the Lady Broncos taking the first set 25-17. The Lady ’Cats came back and won the second set 25-18. The Lady Broncos went on to secure the match victory by winning the third and fourth sets 25-18. 

The five-set bout against Grand’s Lady Red Devils unfolded with long volleys, solid hitting and blocking at the net, as well as strong digging by both squads. The Lady Red Devils edged out a close 27-25 first set win. The second set ended 28-26 with the Lady Red Devils on top, which put them up two games in the matchup. The Lady ’Cats regrouped and came back strong to win the third set, 25-21; held tough to take the fourth set, 30-28; and then the fifth, 15-10, for the victory. 

The Lady ’Cats defeated North Sanpete’s Lady Hawks in four well-matched sets with the Lady ’Cats coming out on top for a 3-1 victory. 

The Lady ’Cats competed in the Sevier Valley Volleyball Tournament held at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, Friday and Saturday. Over the course of the two-day tourney, the Lady ’Cats’ chalked five wins and two losses. Game results are as follows –

• Win, 2-1, over Monticello’s Lady Buckaroos.

• Win, 2-0, over Delta’s Lady Rabbits.

• Win, 2-1, over South Summit’s Lady Wildcats.

• Loss, 2-1, to South Sevier’s Lady Rams.

• Win, 2-0, over North Sanpete’s Lady Hawks. 

• Loss, 2-1, to Panguitch’s Lady Bobcats.

• Win, 2-0, over North Summit’s Lady Braves. 

The Lady ’Cats are currently 6-2 in region play and 23-5 overall. San Juan’s Lady Broncos took over the top spot of the 3A division rankings with their recent, and second victory of the season, over the Lady ’Cats. MaxPreps has the Lady ’Cats ranked second, Morgan third, Union fourth and Grand fifth. 

The Lady ’Cats will host the Lady Dinos of Carbon for their final game of the regular season on their home court in Richfield Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m.
