The Richfield High School baseball team took to the field for the first time since last year’s state championship with a pre-region tournament in St. George Friday and Saturday.
Facing off against larger schools, the Wildcats split their efforts 2-2 during the tournament.
First off, Richfield took on Logan in a 10-6 loss Friday.
Logan went up 6-0 by the bottom of second inning.
The ’Cats batted their way back into the game in the top of the third, scoring four runs. They then held Logan in the bottom of the inning. They returned to the batter’s box to score two more in the top of the fourth to knot everything up at 6-all.
Logan scored again in the bottom of the fourth, and three more times in the bottom of the fifth to take the win.
Richfield’s Morgan Albrecht swatted out his first triple of the spring against Logan, and picked up two RBIs during the game. Dallin Stewart and Jaron Ross both hit out doubles. Max Robinson, Brittyn Riddle and Stewart each had one RBI during the game.
The ’Cats nabbed a 12-3 win over Sky View, tallying up nine hits and having just one error.
Richfield went scoreless through the first three innings, as Sky View established a 2-0 edge. In the fourth inning, Richfield was able to bring two men around the bases to tie things up, but then Sky View broke the tie in the bottom of the inning.
In the fifth inning, the ’Cats got in a good rhythm, scoring 10 runs. The momentum carried over into their defense, closing the game with a win.
Marshall Pallesen took home the win on the mound, while Ross and Albrecht both swatted out triples and two RBIs. Will Robinson also had a pair of RBIs during the game. Max, Riddle, Jake Shepherd, Payton Torgersen and Colsen Jewkes all added one RBI each.
Next, Richfield took on Timpview Saturday morning in a 13-9 win. The ’Cats scored four times in the top of the first inning. Timpview drew things back, scoring three in the bottom.
Richfield scored four more times in the second and twice more in the third to set the tone for the rest of the game. The ’Cats added three more runs in the sixth, where Timpview attempted a rally with five runs, but it was too little, too late.
Albrecht cracked the bat with two doubles and a triple, as well as four RBIs. Heston Jenson also had an RBI and a double. Connor Anderson, Kasey Giddings and Ross also all contributed one RBI each.
Torgersen picked up the win on the mound.
The tournament ended with a 15-5 loss to Corner Canyon. The ’Cats started off strong, whipping out three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Corner Canyon caught up in the third, but Richfield again scored to keep a 4-3 edge.
However, through the fifth and sixth innings, Corner Canyon scored nine runs and outpaced Richfield to secure the win.
Ross led the bats this time, smacking out a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Will added a pair of RBIs as well.
Next the ’Cats are set to take on the Chuckwagon Classic Friday and Saturday, March 13-14, in Kanab with Enterprise, Gunnison, Parowan and Beaver.
