Two road wins for the Lady ’Cats

The second ranked Lady Wildcats of Richfield High School picked up two road wins – the first against San Juan’s Lady Broncos, 57-50, in Blanding Friday and then a 72-24 trouncing of Grand’s Lady Red Devils in Moab Saturday.

The Lady ’Cats 7-1 record in region play and 16-4 overall record have earned the squad a second place ranking in Utah’s girls 3A basketball division.

The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 14-11 lead during the first eight minute-stretch of the bout between the two teams. During the second quarter, the Lady ’Cats turned the three-point deficit into a five point advantage scoring 14 points to the Lady Broncos’ six points. After halftime, the Lady Broncos posted 12 points and held the Lady ’Cats to 11 points. During the fourth quarter, the Lady ’Cats extended their lead scoring 21 points to the Lady Broncos’ 18 points to secure the victory.

Jarica Steck nailed three from downtown for nine of her 14 points. She also snagged eight rebounds and had an assist. Passion Reitz also drilled three treys on her way to 11 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sipola Vakautakakala followed with 10 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal for the Lady ’Cats. Nicole Willardson put up nine points, pulled down eight boards, assisted twice and stole the ball from the Lady Broncos twice.

Amanda Oldroyd sank one from behind the arc for three of her four-point contribution, in addition to a rebound and two assists. Rebecca Poulsen also posted four points, as well as nabbing six boards and stealing the ball once. Jordyn Moon chalked two points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal for the Lady ’Cats during the matchup.

While the Lady ’Cats shot 35 percent from the field against the Lady Broncos, they shot 70 percent from the free-throw line making 14 of 20 attempts. During the pummeling of Grand’s Lady Red Devils, the Lady ’Cats hit 46 percent from the field and 74 percent from the line.

The Lady ’Cats overwhelmed and dominated the Lady Red Devils from tip-off to the final buzzer. During the front half of the game, the Lady ’Cats established a 39 point advantage, 49-10, at halftime. They went on to extend their lead further during the back half putting another 23 points on the scoreboard to the Lady Red Devils’ 14 points for a 48-point win.

The Lady ’Cats had 10 players against Grand. Steck led the Lady ’Cat pack again with 15 points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals. Willardson posted 12 points, pulled five boards and had a steal. Vakautakakala followed with 11 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal for the Lady ’Cats.

Ellie Belnap had 10 points and a rebound, while Reitz scored nine points, grabbed five boards, assisted four times and stole the ball six times from the Lady Red Devils. Poulsen chalked seven points and four rebounds. Oldroyd put up three points and pulled four boards. Jacee Albrecht also had three points, as well as five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Kate Robinson put up two points, snagged two boards, assisted once and stole the ball twice. Moon contributed a point, a rebound, five assists and two steals to the Lady ’Cats’ winning effort.

The Lady ’Cats final game of the regular season will be on their home court against inter-county rivals, the first ranked Lady Rams of South Sevier, today, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.
