The girls’ basketball team of Richfield High School hosted a basketball fundraiser at RHS and Red Hills Middle School in Richfield, Friday and Saturday.
“This was the first Richfield summer invitational and it was a great success,” said Marc Peterson, head coach at RHS. “Due to COVID-19, there were not a lot of options for teams to get some games in, so I decided to send out an invitation to get a few teams here for the weekend. I had far more respond than I expected. We had a total of 70 games played in three gyms over two days.”
Varsity and junior varsity teams from various divisions – 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A, came from across the state to compete in the 12-team tourney. Participating teams included – Beaver, Canyon View, Carbon, Delta, Emery, Kanab, Manti, North Summit, South Sevier, Union, American Leadership Academy and Richfield.
“Teams were matched up randomly and played,” Peterson said. Each player and coach had to pass temperature checks to be allowed to enter. Spectators were kept at a minimum due to social distancing guidelines.
“We received great feedback – every coach thought it was a great event and wants to do it again next year,” Peterson said. “I think we will make it a tradition.”
