3A boys’ regular basketball season comes to a close – ’Cats take down the Rams

South Sevier’s Brandt Williams (11) and Richfield’s Josh Thalman (23) tip-off a rivalry game between the Rams and Wildcats in Monroe Friday night. The ’Cats won the matchup, 74-42.

The boys’ basketball team from Richfield High School picked up two wins over the course of their final week of region play. The first victory was a 65-36 win over the Carbon Dinos in Price, Feb. 5. During the Wildcats’ second game of the week, which was also their final season matchup in league play, the ’Cats defeated the South Sevier Rams, their inter-county rivals, by 42 points, 74-32, in Monroe Friday. 

In the bout against the Rams, the ’Cats hit the court running and never looked back. It took more than four minutes and multiple possessions for the Rams to get on the scoreboard. Two shots from the line by Brandt Williams put the Rams on the board, 16-2, with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter. The ’Cats’ jump-start resulted in a 23-7 advantage by the end of the first eight-minute stretch. 

While the Rams outscored the ’Cats by a single point during the second stanza, 11-10, Richfield’s intense defense controlled the game and shut the Rams’ offensive efforts down for the majority of the endeavor. During the back half of the game, the ’Cats added 41 points to the scoreboard, while holding the Rams to 14 points and chalking the solid win. 

Josh Thalman posted a high school career high draining six 3-pointers for 18 of his 37-point contribution. He also snagged five rebounds, had two assists and a steal for the ’Cats. Emmett Hinck followed with 15 points, nine of which were earned from behind the arc. In addition, he nabbed four boards, assisted four times and stole the ball twice from the Rams. 

Richfield’s Will Robinson hit a trey on his way to nine points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Max Robinson nailed two from downtown for six of his eight points, two rebounds and an assist. Morgan Albrecht put up five points, pulled eight boards down and had four assists for the ’Cats. 

Only three players scored for the South Sevier Rams during the bout. Williams knocked one through the net from behind the arch for three of his 17-point contribution. He also grabbed four rebounds for the Rams during the matchup. Tracen Winkel drilled a trey on his way to eight points, three rebounds and a steal. Brennen Hunt put up seven points, pulled three boards, assisted twice and had a steal for the Rams. 

Both squads have a bye this week for the initial play-in game. 

The second round of the 3A state championship tournament will be held at Utah State University’s Eastern campus, which is located at 451 East 400 North, Price. 

The South Sevier Rams will take the court against the Delta Rabbits in the second round Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5:50 p.m. 

Richfield’s ’Cats will face off with the winner of the South Summit versus Union play-in game scheduled for Feb. 12. The ’Cats will take on the winner at USU Eastern campus Saturday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
