MONROE – The South Sevier High School boys’ basketball team split the week with a 55-49 loss to the fourth ranked Spartans of Emery on the Rams home court in Monroe, Jan. 22. The loss was followed by a 72-59 road-won over Carbon’s Dinos in Price Friday. The split brings the Rams to a 3-3 record in the region and an 8-9 overall record.

The Rams jumped to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans fought back during the second stanza to reduce their deficit to one-point by halftime, 26-25. After the mid-point break, the Spartans put up 17 points and held the Rams to 15 points, which resulted in Emery leading 42-41. The Spartans were able to extend that lead and secure the win scoring 13 points in the finale to the Rams’ eight points.

Brandt Williams led the Rams’ charge draining three from behind the arc for nine of his 18 points. He also nabbed four rebounds and had five assists. Tracen Winkel also hit three 3-pointers on his way to 15 points, three rebounds and two steals for the Rams. Brennen Hunt put up 12 points, pulled down eight boards, assisted twice and stole the ball twice from the Spartans. Landen Payne posted four points. 

In the game against Carbon, the Rams shot 85 percent from the line and hit 25 field goals to the Dinos’ 65 percent and 21 field goals. 

The Rams established a four-point lead during the front half of the matchup. The Dinos stayed in the game and cut the lead to one-point going into the fourth quarter, 50-49. The Rams exploded during the final stretch scoring 22 points, while holding the Dinos to 10 points to chalk the victory. 

Williams led the pack again with 32 points, six of which were earned from downtown. He also snagged nine rebounds, had two assists and a steal. Karson drilled two treys for six of his 12 points, in addition to six rebounds and an assist. Brennen also posted 12 points, along with two rebounds and five assists. Payne sank a 3-pointer on his way to nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds and assisted twice. Winkel scored five points. Ridge Tebbs contributed two points. 

South Sevier will be on the road this week. They will take the court against Grand’s Red Devils in Moab Friday, Jan. 31. After which, they will face off with San Juan’s Broncos in Blanding Saturday, Feb. 1. Both bouts will tip-off at 7 p.m.
