MONROE – The Annual Monroe Lions Club’s All-Star Basketball tournament helped raise funds for the South Sevier High School stadium-seating project, which came to an end with the Lions sponsored tournament in Monroe Saturday.
“We are pleased with how this year’s tournament went,” Lions Club President George Judd said. “We received a lot of positive feedback from the parents, coaches and players.”
All proceeds from the tourney will go to the Lions Club to help fund the organizations various community projects; however, the majority of the approximate $2,000 raised from the event will be donated to the SSHS bleacher project, which will better accommodate attendees and the special needs of some fans.
“We have used the SSHS gymnasium for a variety of Lions Club events over the years,” Judd said. “Assisting with the bleacher project is a way for the Lions Club to give back and thank the school for accommodating us for so many years.”
The tournament was comprised of male and female teams consisting of some of the best high school basketball players of this last winter season from across the state in the 1A, 2A and 3A divisions. A game between the all-stars from the 1A and 2A girls division kicked off the event. Such was followed by a game between the all-stars from the 1A and 2A boys division.
The boys’ and girls’ all-star teams from the 2A division won their matchups and moved on to play against all-stars from the 3A boys’ and girls’ divisions Saturday evening. The boys’ and girls’ teams from the 3A division came out on top. Both games consisted of impressive 3-point shooting, ball handling and sportsmanship by all participants.
“We would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s event and helped make it a success,” Judd said. “The generosity of local businesses and all donation contributors is greatly appreciated.”
