Lady Rams retain first place rank

MONROE – The Lady Rams of South Sevier High School earned back-to-back road wins last week. The first was a 76-25 walloping of Grand’s Lady Red Devil’s in Moab Friday, which was followed by a second big win over San Juan’s Lady Broncos, 70-48, in Moab Saturday.

The Lady Rams have earned their first place ranking in the 3A division with a 7-1 record in region play and 19-1 overall.

The Lady Rams schooled the Lady Red Devils and outscored them during each quarter of their matchup – 28-7 in the first, 15-9 in the second, 20-5 in the third and 13-4 in the fourth.

Fourteen players scored for the Lady Rams against the Lady Red Devils. Presley Chappell led the charge with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kenzie Jones drilled three from behind the arc for nine of her 15 point-contribution. She also had a rebound, three assists and two steals for the Lady Rams. Leah Torgersen put up 13 points, pulled down 10 boards and assisted twice. Saige Okerlund nailed two from downtown on her way to 10 points, four rebounds, an assist and four steals. Alexa Robinson posted eight points and a rebound, while Breelyn Ingram had four points, six boards, an assist and a steal.

Brookell Brindley drilled a trey for her three point-contribution, in addition to assisting four times and stealing the ball once from the Lady Red Devils. Aspen Okerlund also hit a 3-pointer, in addition to two assists and a steal for the Lady Rams. Cassie Johnson posted two points, four boards, five assists and two steals. Emmalie Peterson scored two points, snagged a rebound and had a steal during the matchup.

The Lady Rams shot 50 percent from the free-throw line and 49 percent from the field. Against San Juan’s Lady Broncos, the Lady Rams hit 74 percent from the line and 49 percent of their field goals.

The Lady Broncos of San Juan took a one-point lead by the end of the first eight-minute stretch, which ended 17-16. The Lady Rams came back during the second quarter scoring 17 points to the Lady Broncos’ 13 points creating a three-point lead when the squad’s split for halftime. During the back half of the game, the Lady Rams dominated putting 37 points on the scoreboard, while holding the Lady Broncos to 18 points and chalking the win.

Chappell led the charge again with 30 points. Torgersen followed with 18 points, while Brindley had nine points. Jones posted seven points, Johnson chalked four points and Aspen contributed two points in the Lady Rams’ winning effort.

Regular season play will wrap up with a bout against the second-ranked Lady Wildcats in Richfield today, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.
