’Cats’ football season ends – Grantsville takes quarterfinal victory to advance

Richfield’s Brittyn Riddle carries the ball for a first down during the Wilcats’ final game of the year in Grantsville Friday night.

The Richfield High School football team ended its playoff run Friday evening in Grantsville against the top team of Region 13.

The quarterfinals game ended with the Wildcats going down 42-14.

The game started with Richfield choking Grantsville’s inaugural series at the Cowboys’ own 42-yard line.

Richfield got the ball, but was unable to push it far and ended up punting. The ’Cats’ defense was able to push Grantsville back to the eight-yard line, which is where Jackson Sanberg launched a gambit pass play to Ammon Bartley, who wheeled his way the balance of 92 yards for the first touchdown of the game with 4:11 left in the first stanza.

The teams exchanged punts through most of the second period. A field goal attempt from 32 yards out went wide for Richfield, setting Grantsville up on its own 20-yard line. The Cowboys were unable to move the ball far, and gambled on a fake out pass play on the fourth down.

The ’Cats broke up the pass, and took over 26 yards from the pay dirt. That’s when quarterback Gavin Brown sent a pass to Brittyn Riddle, who bounded into the end zone, putting Richfield on the board with 47 seconds left in the half.

After Kordell Morgan’s PAT, the ’Cats had knotted the game at 7-all.

Grantsville used what was left in the half, pulling off a scoring play with zero left on the clock as Sandberg connected again with Bartley for a 12-yard TD.

Coming back from the half, Grantsville intercepted a Richfield pass on a second down. Two plays later, the Cowboys had again scored, this time with a 39-yard pass from Sandberg to Taylor Wood.

With 10:51 to go in the third, Grantsville was up 20-7.

The Cowboys were not as successful on their next possession, which ended with a bad snap at the 39-yard line, resulting in a 34-yard loss on a fourth down.

Brown sent the ball to Jake Hyatt from five yards out for the ’Cats’ second TD of the game with 5:25 to go in the third period.

However, through the rest of the game the ’Cats couldn’t catch a break as the Cowboys were able to pile on three more TDs and hold off the Richfield offense.

Grantsville advances to the semi-finals against Juab this week. North Sanpete will take on Morgan. Both games will be played at Mountain View High School Saturday, Nov. 9.
