The boys’ basketball team of Richfield High School picked up a road win over Desert Hills, 56-49, in St. George Friday despite the size advantage the 4A Thunder had over the Wildcats. The ’Cats’ tough defense held the Thunder from controlling the game and limited their scoring in the paint.

Both of the well-matched squads put 12 points on the scoreboard during the first quarter. The ’Cats pulled ahead during the second stanza scoring 14 points and holding the Thunder to six points for a 26-18 lead.

The Thunder came back strong after the halftime break turning an eight-point deficit into a three-point advantage putting 17 points on the scoreboard to the ’Cats’ 12 points. During the final eight-minute stretch, the ’Cats fought back hard to reclaim the lead and lock the victory scoring 21 points and holding the Thunder to 11 points.

Joshua Thalman led the ’Cat pack drilling four 3-pointers for 12 of his 26 points. He also had 12 rebounds and an assist. Emmett Hinck hit two from downtown on his way to nine points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Gavin Brown nailed two treys for six of his eight-point contribution. Dallin Stewart posted four points, while Hayden Harward and Max Robinson each had three points. Will Robinson put up one point, pulled down a board, assisted five times and stole the ball from the Thunder four times. Morgan Albrecht nabbed four rebounds, had two assists and a steal. Kasey Giddings chalked three boards, two assists and a steal for the ’Cats during the matchup.

The ’Cats are currently ranked second in the 3A division with a 7-3 overall record.

The ’Cats will be on the road for back-to-back bouts – the first in Moab against Grand’s Red Devils Friday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m., and then to Blanding to take the court against the San Juan Broncos Saturday, Jan. 11, at 4:30 p.m.
