Junction – Piute’s Lady T-Bird’s basketball team picked up two road wins last week. The first was a 48-40 victory over the Lady Bobcats in Panguitch Friday, and the second a 45-32 victory over the Lady Eagles in Duchesne Saturday.
The Lady T-birds and the Lady Bobcats matched up well and fought hard throughout the back-and-forth game. Piute took an early lead scoring 15 points to Panguitch’s nine points in the first quarter. The Lady Bobcats came back strong during the second stanza and turned a six-point deficit into a four-point lead scoring 18 points and holding the Lady T-birds to eight points.
After the halftime break, the Lady T-birds reclaimed the lead putting 16 points on the scoreboard to the Lady Bobcats’ 10 points. Piute went on to score nine points during the final eight-minute stretch and held Panguitch to three points, which secured the win.
Kassidy Westwood lead the T-bird’s offense with 21 points, nine of which were earned from behind the arc. Myndi Morgan followed with 12 points. Heidi Jensen hit a trey for three of her nine-point contribution. Ashley Talbot scored four points, while Alysen Talbot added two points to the Lady T-bird’s winning effort.
Against Duchesne, the Lady T-birds lead throughout the game and outscored the Lady Eagles during each quarter of the matchup – 13-8 in the first, 8-5 in the second, 12-10 in the third and 12-9 in the fourth.
Jensen topped the Lady T-birds’ offense drilling three 3-pointers for nine of her 17 points. Westwood also sank a trey on her way to 10 points. Alysen drained one from downtown for three of her seven points. Myndi posted five points, Tera Morgan had four points and Ashley added two points to the Lady T-birds’ scoreboard.
The Lady T-birds are currently ranked third in the 1A division with a 3-1 record in region play and a 7-3 overall record.
The Lady T-birds will host Water Canyon’s Lady Wildcats on their home court in Junction today, Jan. 9, at 5 p.m. The squad will then travel to take the court against the Lady Moquis in Escalante Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m.
