The Richfield High School cheerleaders earned themselves three trophies during the Utah State Cheer Competition Jan. 27.
The girls placed first in song-leading/pom and in sideline/timeout dance.
The girls also placed second in the varsity all-girl show cheer.
South Sevier High School’s cheerleaders also nabbed a first place in sideline/timeout cheer, and second in sideline/timeout dance.
North Sevier’s girls won the varsity all-girl cheer division in the 2A classification.
While cheerleading is not sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association, many cheer teams in Utah have a competitive component to their programs, said Lori Rupp, competition director.
“These competitions are sponsored by national companies and are held all over the country and Utah cheer teams do very well against other states,” Rupp said.
The competition ran in three sessions including the 2A/3A, 4A through 6A and middle school divisions.
The Utah Cheer Team Coaches Association works in conjunction with the directors to create rules and score sheets. There is also an academic all-state award presented, which Richfield’s Josie Thalman earned this year.
