Lady T-birds split week

JUNCTION – Piute High School’s Lady Thunderbirds opened the season with a 44-29 loss to Monument Valley’s Lady Cougars at the 1A Preview Tournament held at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, Nov. 22 and 23. The loss was followed by a 42-24 victory over the Lady Pirates of Green River, Nov. 23. 

In the matchup against Monument Valley, the Lady T-birds struggled offensively and failed to find the bottom of the net during the first quarter, while the Lady Cougars scored 13 points. Piute was able to chalk 11 points in the second stanza to the Lady Cougars’ eight points. During the second half of the bout, the Lady T-birds scored one point in the third quarter and 17 in the fourth. The Lady Cougars put up 16 points in the third and seven in the final eight minutes to bank the win. 

Heidi Jensen led the Lady T-birds with 13 points, three of which were earned from behind the arc. She also had a rebound and a steal. Alysen Talbot also nailed a trey for three of her five points, in addition to four rebounds, two assists and six steals from the Lady Cougars. Tera Morgan put up five points and pulled down seven boards, while Myndi Morgan added four points, a rebound and four steals to the Lady T-birds’ stats. 

In the bout against Green River’s Lady Pirates, Tera led the pack drilling two 3-pointers for six of her 10 points, as well as five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Kassidy Westwood also put up 10 points for the Lady T-birds, pulled down five boards, three assists and stole the ball three times from the Lady Pirates. Jensen hit a trey for three of her seven point contribution, in addition to five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Ashton Winckel scored six points and snagged two rebounds, while Myndi added five points, a rebound and a steal to the Lady T-bird’s winning effort. 

The Lady T-birds will host North Sanpete’s Lady Hawks in Junction Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. The squad will then travel to Kanab for a bout with the Cowgirls Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.
