MAPLE GROVE — A fatal accident occurred on U.S. Highway 50 Friday afternoon.
A white Chevrolet Malibu was traveling on U.S. 50 near milepost 149 at a high speed when the vehicle left the roadway, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The driver overcorrected, crossed all lanes of traffic, left the opposite side of the road and rolled several times. Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle as neither of the two was wearing a seatbelt, according to UHP.
The driver, Luis G. Martinez, 23, South Ogden, passed away at the scene of the accident.
The passenger, Cinthia A. Palacios, 23, Clearfield, was taken from the scene of the accident via an Airmed helicopter and flown to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, where she passed away a short time later.
Traffic in both directions was closed for approximately one hour while an Airmed helicopter landed on the roadway to transport Palacios.
A witness from Richfield had reported observing the car on Interstate 70 about an hour prior to the accident and noted it was driving recklessly, according to UHP.
Drugs, drug paraphernalia and alcohol were located strewn about the scene of the accident.
Speed and impairment are being investigated as contributors, according to UHP officials.
