A series of collisions ended up in a confusing mess of vehicles being smashed up on Interstate 70 between Richfield and Sigurd Saturday afternoon.
The accidents started when a 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup driven by Jed Loveless, 21, Payson, rear-ended a 2007 Nissan Sentra driven by Shaquita Sanders, 39, Chicago, Illinois, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
According to the UHP, Loveless said he had been adjusting a gun rack in his truck’s backseat area when he hit the Sentra.
The Sentra — disabled due to the crash — came to rest in one of the I-70 travel lanes. That’s when a Lincoln Navigator driven by Allen Robins, 66, Salina, hit the Sentra, throwing it into the path of a 2008 Mazda 6 driven by a 16-year-old juvenile from Richfield who was trying to pass.
All four vehicles ended up on the sides of the roadway.
The Richfield City Fire Department was dispatched to the scene to help extricate people from the wrecked vehicles.
Seat belts were used in all the vehicles involved in the pileup, with at least three people transported to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield for evaluation and treatment of injuries.
