A traffic stop erupted into a chase that ended in the apprehension of a man suspected in bank robberies.

The incident began the morning of Jan. 8, when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper pulled over a 1999 Ford Expedition for the driver not wearing a seat belt on Interstate 70, approximately three miles south of Richfield.

Upon running the vehicle’s registration, it came back as a felon vehicle, according to the UHP. As officers arrived to provide backup, the suspect took off.

The suspect exited I-70 and drove into a convenience store parking lot, where he got out of the vehicle, sat on the ground and waited for police, according to the UHP.

Ronald Sever, 56, Virginia Beach, Virginia, was arrested for two counts fugitive from justice warrants — tied to his suspected role in bank robberies — possession of illegal controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and evading police.

The investigation was turned over to the Utah Department of Public Safety State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
