HEPPLERS PONDS — Three youths were injured, one critically, when a 2009 Polaris Ranger rolled near Hepplers Ponds at approximately 6 p.m. Sept. 25.
The incident occurred approximately three miles west of Glenwood, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The 15-year-old male driver of the Ranger, and a 14-year-old male passenger both received minor injuries in the accident, according to the UHP.
A 14-year-old female, Shelby Benson, Annabella, was pinned under the Ranger. After being freed from beneath the vehicle, emergency medical technicians worked to stabilize her. Benson was transported via helicopter to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City for treatment of her injuries.
No one in the Ranger was using safety equipment at the time of the incident, according to the UHP accident report.
Investigation of the incident was turned over to the UHP, because one of the accident victims was related to a Sevier County Sheriff’s Office deputy, said Sheriff Nate Curtis.
Community members gathered in Annabella for a candlelight vigil for Benson Friday night. For more about the vigil, see page 1A of this week’s edition of The Richfield Reaper.
